Salta

Salta is both a city and a province in Argentina. The province is located in the northwest of the country and borders Bolivia and Paraguay to the north and Chile to the West. It has some of the most spectacular landscapes in Argentina from arid deserts to vast salt flats, to stunning multi-colored rock formations and ravines, and finally the famous wine growing region of Cafayate to the South. The capital of the province, also called Salta, is a charming town famous for its old, colonial architecture.

Salta City

Situated in the Lerma Valley, 1,152 meters (3,780 ft) above sea level, Salta is famous for its old, colonial architecture, the teleférico (cable car) that goes up Cerrado San Bernardo, a hill that offers spectacular views of the city, and the two artisan markets where one can find textiles, leather goods, indigenous handicrafts and ceramics.

Cafayate

Located about 3.5 hours south of Salta city, Cafayate is a small town that is famous for wine made from the Torrontés grape, a white grape variety that is distinctive to the region. Visitors can enjoy wine tasting at some of the highest vineyards in the world, reaching up to 10,000 ft above sea level.

Quebrada de las Conchas

The 50 km of Ruta 68 that pass through the Quebrada de las Conchas (Shell's Ravine) on the way from Salta to Cafayate, is one of the most iconic drives in Argentina. The area is filled with other-worldly red rock formations like the Amphitheater, which is famous for its magnificent acoustics.

Salinas Grandes

Located about 4.5 hours north of Salta, at an average altitude of about 3,450 m (11,320 ft), Salinas Grandes is the third largest salt flat in the world. Covering nearly 212 km sq, this vast white desert was once Lago Salinas Grandes, a lake that evaporated in the Holocene epoch.

Purmamarca

A small village on the way to Salinas Grandes, Purmamarca is located near the brilliant Cerro de los Siete Colores, a rock formation with seven different colors. The town is also the gateway to the breathtaking Quebrada de Humahuaca, a multi-colored mountainous valley on the drive from Argentina to Bolivia.
