Quebrada de las Conchas

About an hour and a half away from Salta, on the way to Cafayate, the 50 km of Ruta 68 that pass through the Quebrada de las Conchas (Shell’s Ravine) is one of the most iconic drives in Argentina.

A part of the Calchaquí valley which runs from Cafayate in the south to Salta in the north, the Quebrada de las Conchas is filled with other-worldly red rock formations, the most famous of which are the Amphitheater and Devil’s Throat. The Amphitheater, a cavernous rock formation has magnificent acoustics. Musicians can often be found playing local folk music inside. Devil’s Throat was once the site of a roaring waterfall that has now dried up.

Other rock formations that can be found in the region include El Obelisco, which looks a bit like an obelisk, El Sapo which looks like a Toad, and Casa de los Loros, which looks like a Parrot’s nest.
