Greece

Greece, located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, is considered to be the cradle of Western civilization, the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, literature, theater, the Olympic games, and major political, scientific and mathematical principles.

Dating all the way back to the 8th century BC, the Greeks were organized into various independent city states. In the 4th century, Philip II of Macedon united most of ancient Greece. His son, Alexander the Great, rapidly expanded the Greek empire, conquering territories as far as the edge of India. The subsequent period called the Hellenistic period was the height of Greek culture and influence. In the 2nd century BC though, Greece was conquered by the Romans, and became an integral part of the Roman Empire, and later the Byzantine Empire. By the 15th century, it became a part of the Ottoman Empire, until it finally emerged as a nation state in 1830.

With its expansive history, Greece has some of the most famous ancient architectural and archaeological treasures in the world. It is also known for its stunning landscapes, countless breathtaking islands like Santorini and Mykonos, and vibrant cities like Athens and Thessaloniki with mouth watering cuisine and exciting nightlife.

Athens

With a recorded history spanning over 3,400 years, and its earliest human presence dating back to between the 11th and 7th century BC, Athens is one of the world's oldest cities. Home to famous monuments like the Acropolis, Athens also offers stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, enchanting markets, spectacular cultural events, and a vibrant nightlife.

Delphi

Delphi, the sanctuary of Apollo and home to the shrine of his oracle, is where the Pythia (priestess) would utter the words of the Oracle, as sent to her by Apollo. The ruins of the Sacred Way, the wall behind the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Temple of Apollo, and other sites are still visible.

Meteora

The Meteora, which literally means 'hovering in the air,' is a spectacular rock formation in central Greece on top of which are several Eastern Orthodox monasteries. The area was originally settled in the 11th century by monks who lived in caves in the rocks. Today, only six monasteries are active.

Santorini, Mykonos, and the Cyclades Islands

The Cyclades are a group of islands in the Aegean Sea. The two most famous islands in the group are Santorini and Mykonos. The island chain is famous for crystal clear blue waters, sandy beaches (including red and black sand), breathtaking landscapes, picturesque villages, traditional cuisine and music, and a vibrant nightlife.

Corfu, Zakynthos, and the Ionian Islands

The Ionian islands are a group of islands in the Ionian sea to the west of the Greek mainland. Zakynthos, with its majestic shipwreck on a beach surrounded by steep cliffs, is one of the most photographed locations in Greece. Other popular islands in the chain are Corfu, Kefalonia and Lefkada. Ithaka, Paxos and Antipaxos and Meganisi are more idyllic and relaxing.

Crete

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, and the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The island has everything from ruins of ancient monuments, to towns with beautiful Venetian mansions, spectacular beaches, high mountain ranges, deep gorges and valleys, and a rich variety of culture and gastronomy.

Nafplio

Only a 2 hour drive from Athens, Nafplio is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in Greece. Apart from its stunning Venetian architecture, picturesque restaurants and cafes, spectacular waterfront promenade, and long sandy beaches, the town also has historical importance as the first capital of independent Greece (1823-1834).

Porto Heli

Located 40 km southeast of Nafplio, Porto Heli is a popular summer destination with several luxury resorts, remote beaches with soft sand, traditional villages and small chapels. It is also the perfect gateway for excursions to ancient Epidaurus, Nafplion, Mycenae, Ermioni, and Spetses island. The former King of Greece, Constantine II, lives here.

Spetses

Located south of Porto Heli, in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, Spetses stands out for its Venetian architecture, beautiful beaches, and relaxing atmosphere, as no cars are allowed on the island. The main port of Dapia has interesting museums, and several excellent cafes and bars, ideal for a romantic sunset.

Mount Athos

Mount Athos is a mountain and peninsula near Thessaloniki, and an important center of Eastern Orthodox monasticism since 1054. The 'Holy Mountain' is home to over 20 monasteries that are presently inhabited by nearly 1,400 monks. Men can visit the monasteries, but stays are limited to four days.

Thessaloniki

Founded in 315 BC by Cassander of Macedon, and named after his wife Thessalonike, the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki today is Greece's second largest city. It has several important archaeological and historical sites from the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman era, excellent museums, high-end boutiques and fashion retailers, and exceptional restaurants.
