Delphi

Delphi, the sanctuary of Apollo and home to the shrine of his oracle, is one of the most important historical sites in Greece. In ancient times, this sacred precinct served as the seat of the Pythia (priestess), who would sit and utter the words of the Oracle, as sent to her by Apollo. Today, visitors can still see:

1. The Sacred Way, the main route through the Sanctuary of Apollo
2. The 6th century Polygonal Wall behind the Sanctuary of Apollo, which supports the platform on which the Temple of Apollo stands
3. The foundations of the 4th century Doric style Temple of Apollo, where the pythia sat and consulted the Oracle
4. The Treasury of the Athenians, built around 510 BC and re-erected in 1903-06
5. The 4th century Theater that could accommodate 5,000 spectactors on 35 rows of stone benches
6. The Stadion, built to host the Pythian games from 590 BC onwards
7. The Tholos, a masterpiece of classical architecture dating back to around 320 BC

The modern town also has several hotels, restaurants and offers activities like trekking and skiing.
