Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum is the former home of the Danish author Baroness Karen Blixen, who lived here from 1917-1931. The story of her life in this house was depicted in the famous Hollywood movie "Out of Africa" with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, which itself was based on the autobiographical novel of the same name. The Museum is located about 6 km from downtown Nairobi, at the "foot of the Ngong hills" as it says in the opening line of the movie. From 1917-1921, Karen Blixen lived in the house with her husband Baron Bror von Blixen. After their divorce in 1921 she lived her alone until she fell in love with an American ivory trader named Denys Finch Hatton. When Finch Hatton died in a plane crash in 1931, Karen Blixen sold the house and returned to Denmark. In 1964, the Danish government purchased Blixen’s former farmhouse house and gifted it to Kenya as a token of the country’s newly gained independence from Britain.
