West Thumb Geyser Basin

Located on the western side of Lake Yellowstone, near the south entrance to the park, West Thumb Geyser Basin is one of the smallest geothermal areas of Yellowstone, but also one that is not to be missed. There is a walking trail that takes about half an hour that goes past several thermal features along the lakeshore including Abyss Pool, Yellowstone’s deepest hydrothermal pool, and the Fishing Cone, which received its name from early explorers who stood on the cone and cast their lines into the lake to catch fish, then parboiled their catch in the vent of the Fishing Cone without taking the fish off the hook. Visitors should plan on 30 minutes to an hour to cover the trail.
