Old Faithful

Old Faithful is the most famous geyser in Yellowstone National Park, and one of the most famous sights in the world. It was named ‘Old Faithful’ in 1870 by the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition for its frequent and somewhat predictable eruptions, typically every 90 minutes. The height of each eruption varies between 100 and 180 feet, with an average of around 130-140 feet. The length of each eruption and amount of water also varies from around 3,700 gallons for a short eruption of about 1.5 minutes to 8,700 gallons for a long eruption of around 4.5 minutes. During an eruption, the water temperature at the vent can be as high as 204 degrees Fahrenheit (95.6 Celsius) and the steam temperature has been measured as high as 350 degrees Fahrenheit! Over a million eruptions have been recorded since Yellowstone was declared a National Park. Currently, the geyser erupts around 20 times a day and an eruption can be predicted with 90% confidence within a variation of 10 minutes, however the average time between eruption has been slowly increasing.
