Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River, is one of the must-see sights in Yellowstone National Park. The Canyon itself is over 24 miles (34 km) long and up to 4000 ft (1.2 km) wide, and some parts are 1200 ft (365 m) deep. There are several viewpoints and walking trails along both rims of the canyon but the main lookout that should not be missed is Artist Point, a lookout along the South Rim that offers an exceptional view of the canyon and its most famous feature, the Lower Falls. The Yellowstone River is the force that created the canyon and the falls. It begins on the slopes of Yount Peak, south of the park, and travels more than 600 miles to its terminus in North Dakota where it empties into the Missouri River. It is the longest undammed river in the continental United States. The colors in the canyon are also a result of hydrothermal alteration, and indicate the presence or absence of water in the individual iron compounds in the canyon rock. Most of the yellows in the canyon are the result of iron present in the rock rather than sulfur, as many people think.
