The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal is the primary waterway in Venice, and one of the most prestigious addresses in the city. Flowing through the city in a 3 km long reverse S-curve, the canal splits the city into two. Both sides of the canal are lined with Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance style hotels, churches and palaces like the 15th century Ca d’Oro, and the Palazzo Pesaro.
There are four bridges across the canal, the 16th century Rialto Bridge, which crosses the canal near its halfway point, the mid-19th century Accademia Bridge, the Scalzi Bridge at the west end of the canal, and the Constitution Bridge, built as recently as 2008 to link the railway station to the bus terminal and parking complex at Rome square.
There are several water buses, called Vaporettos, which cruise down the Grand Canal, stopping at various points on both sides of the canal. The most popular of these vaporettos is line #1, which includes the Ca’ d’Oro Palazzo, Gallerie dell’Accademia, the palazzo Ca’Rezzonico, Santa Maria della Salute and the well-known Rialto Bridge. There are also several traditional gondolas that offer tourists a romantic, private tour of the Grand Canal.
