Murano
Murano is a series of islands connected by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon that is famous for spectacular glass works. Fearing destruction of the city’s mainly wooden buildings by fire, the Venetian Republic ordered Venetian glassmakers to move to the islands of Murano in 1291. Since then, Murano has become synonymous with spectacular glass works ranging from contemporary glass art and jewellery, to glass chandeliers and sculptures.
Visitors can see artisans craft exquisite glass artifacts in real time after pulling red-hot molten glass right out of the furnace, and shop for exquisite glass works at several glass factories. Some of the most famous glass factories in Murano include the workshop of Bruno Fusato Signoretti, one of Murano’s most famous glass makers, and the workshop of the Schiavon Art Team. Visitors can also see the Murano Glass Museum, which showcases the fascinating history of Murano and the glass-blowing techniques that were developed here.
