Priene, Didyma & Euromos

About 2 hours south of Izmir, are the three ancient Greek settlements of Priene, Didyma, and Euromos.

Priene, dating back to the 11th century BC was founded either by Aegyptus of Athens, Philotas of Thebes or Amazon queens like Pitane, Myrina, Kyme and Ephesus. Coinage from the city has been found dating back to 500 BC. The city appears to have been abandoned around 1300 AD as the only construction in the area after that date is a small Byzantine fortification and a 6th century church.

Didyma was an ancient Greek sanctuary and the oracular shrine of Apollo in the domain of the famous city of Miletus, to which it was connected by the “Sacred Road.” The oracle of Apollo at Didyma was situated in what was once one of the world’s greatest temples of Apollo. Didyma also had a temple dedicated to Apollo’s twin Artemis, but not much remains of it. A Greek theater has also been discovered recently at the site. Didyma was destroyed by the Persians after they defeated the Ionians and captured the region.

Euromos, probably dates back to the 6th century BC. The main attraction at the site is the remains of the Temple of Zeus, which itself seems to have never been fully completed. Other ruins found at the site include a theater, an agora and massive defensive walls.
