Bodrum

Bodrum is a port city on the southwestern coast of Turkey, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean, and one of the most glamorous vacation spots in Turkey. Its evergreen peninsulas stretch out into the crystal clear waters of the Aegean, with several Greek islands only a few miles away. The city has several upscale restaurants, hotels and resorts, and a harbor where several expensive superyachts dock regularly.

In ancient Greek times, Bodrum was known as Halicarnassus of Caria. One of the key sights in the city is Bodrum Castle, a medieval fortress completed in the 4th century BC, that was partly built with stones from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.’ Another key sight is the Myndos Gate in the eastern part of the city. Constructed around the 4th century BC, it was the western entrance gate to the ancient city of Halicarnassus, and is the only surviving part of the ancient city wall of Halicarnassus. The gate protected the city from many enemy attacks due to a large fortification ditch, 56 meters long, 2.5 meters deep, and 7.5 meters wide that once had several defensive devices like catapults and battering rams. Legend has it that when Alexander the Great tried to invade the city, even he was unable to pass the deep, broad trench in front of the gate.
