Bilbao

Bilbao is a vibrant city located in Spain’s Basque country that is most famous for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. The museum’s distinctive titanium-clad structure has become a symbol of the city. Inside, the museum houses a world-class collection of contemporary art.

Bilbao also has a historic Old Town, with a maze of narrow streets lined with charming buildings, shops, and eateries. Highlights include the Santiago Cathedral, Plaza Nueva, and the Mercado de la Ribera, one of the largest covered markets in Europe. The Nervión River runs through the heart of Bilbao, and its waterfront has been revitalized in recent years. Visitors can stroll along the riverside promenades, cross the iconic Zubizuri footbridge (designed by Santiago Calatrava), and take in views of the city’s skyline.

Like the rest of the Basque Country, Bilbao is renowned for its culinary scene. Visitors can enjoy pintxos (Basque-style tapas) in the city’s numerous bars and restaurants, as well as traditional Basque dishes such as bacalao al pil-pil (codfish in a garlic and olive oil sauce) and txangurro (stuffed crab). Football (soccer) is also a significant part of Bilbao’s culture, and the city is home to one of Spain’s most storied clubs, Athletic Club Bilbao. The team’s stadium, San Mamés Stadium, is located in the city center and is known for its passionate supporters and electrifying atmosphere during matches.
