Plaça d’Espanya

Constructed for the occasion of the 1929 International Exhibition, Plaça d’Espanya is one of the most important and prominent squares in Barcelona. Located at the foot of Montjuïc Hill, this spacious and visually striking square serves as a major transportation hub, cultural center, and tourist attraction. Several of the city’s most important avenues including Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, Avinguda del Parallel, Carrer de la Creu Coberta and the Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, which leads to the Museu Nacional d’Art Catalunya, meet here.

At the entrance to the square are two impressive Venetian Towers, inspired by the campaniles of St. Mark’s Square in Venice. These towers serve as iconic landmarks of Plaça d’Espanya. Beyond the towers, at the foot of the Museu Nacional d’Art, is the Magic Fountain (Font Màgica) of Montjuïc. This large fountain hosts nightly light and music shows, creating a captivating spectacle. The shows are free to the public and are especially popular during the summer months. On the other end of the square is the Las Arenas Shopping Mall, which was the former bullring of Barcelona. The mall has a rooftop terrace with great views of the square and the city.
