Seville

Seville, the capital and largest city in Andalucia, has a rich and storied history marked by a blend of Roman, Moorish, and Christian influences. Many of the sights in Seville, including the Seville Cathedral, the Alcazar of Seville, and the Archivo de Indias have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Originally founded as the Roman city of Hispalis during the 2nd century BC, Seville became a major trade and administrative center under Roman rule. After the fall of the Roman empire, the city was ruled by the Visigoths, until it was conquered by the Moors in 711 AD. During Moorish rule, the city was known as Isbiliya, and became a major cultural and economic center known for its gardens, libraries, and architectural achievements. In 1248, Seville was recaptured by Christian forces during the Reconquista, marking the end of Moorish rule.

Seville played a major role during the Age of Exploration between the 15th and 17th century, serving as the main port through which goods from the New World were funneled into Spain. Many of the city’s iconic buildings, including the Seville Cathedral and the Giralda tower were constructed during this time.

During the 20th century, Seville continued to modernize. Today, it is known as a major cultural center, famous for its flamenco music and dance and many cultural festivals. Visitors flock to Seville to experience its history, architecture, cuisine, and culture.
