Alicante

Alicante, is located south of Valencia, on the eastern Mediterranean coast. The city was founded by the Romans who named it “Lucentum,” meaning “City of Light.” Over the centuries, it was ruled by various civilizations, including the Moors and the Christians, each leaving their mark on the city’s architecture and culture.

Alicante’s charming Old Town is characterized by narrow winding streets, historic buildings, and bustling squares. Visitors can explore attractions such as the Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the Basilica of Santa Maria, and the Town Hall Square (Plaza del Ayuntamiento), and the Explanada de España, a picturesque promenade running alongside Alicante’s marina. The promenade is adorned with thousands of colorful tiles arranged in a wave-like pattern, creating a stunning visual effect, and is lined with palm trees, cafes, and shops, making it a popular spot for leisurely strolls and people-watching. Other key sights in the city include the Castle of Santa Bárbara, situated on Mount Benacantil overlooking the city. This historic fortress, dating back to the 9th century, offers panoramic views of Alicante and the surrounding Mediterranean coastline.

Perhaps the most famous attraction of Alicante however is its beaches. Alicante is blessed with several stunning beaches, including Playa del Postiguet, located at the foot of Mount Benacantil near the city center. This urban beach offers golden sands and crystal-clear waters, making it a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming. Other notable beaches in the area include Playa de San Juan, which is one of the longest beaches on the Costa Blanca, and Playa de la Albufereta, known for its calm waters and scenic surroundings.
