Salta City

The city of Salta is the capital of the Argentinian province of the same name. Situated in the Lerma Valley, 1,152 meters (3,780 ft) above sea level, Salta is famous for its old, colonial architecture, including its neo-classical style cathedral, the 18th century Cabildo (a Spanish colonial administrative council) and the 9 de Julio central square. Perhaps the most popular activities are the teleférico (cable car) that goes up Cerrado San Bernardo, a hill that offers spectacular views of the city, and shopping in the two artisan markets in the city where one can find textiles, leather goods, indigenous handicrafts and ceramics.

Visitors should also explore the many attractions near the city, including:
1. Cafayate and the breathtaking landscapes along Ruta 68 and 33, especially the Quebrada de las Conchas (Shell’s Ravine), an area filled with other-worldly red rock formations
2. Las Salinas Grandes (a vast salt flat)
3. Purmamarca, a small town located next to the Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of Seven Colors), on the way from Salta to Las Salinas Grandes
4. La Quebrada de San Lorenzo, a nature reserve in the popular village of San Lorenzo
5. The “Tren a las Nubes” or “The Train to the Clouds,” Argentina’s most famous train trip and a true feat of human engineering
