Astoria is a picturesque coastal fishing village and port with a distinct Scandinavian and Victorian flavor. The town is famous for its Victorian-era homes stretching to the hills overlooking the Columbia River, several forts, the most famous of which is Fort Astor, the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky mountains, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, which showcases fishing, shipping and military history, the Astoria Column, a towering hilltop monument that offers panoramic views of the region, and great local restaurants and breweries. It is is also a port of call for cruise ships.
