Pinacoteca di Brera

Founded by Napoleon in 1809, Pinacoteca di Brera is among the largest art galleries in Italy. The name Pinacoteca di Brera is a combination of the Greek word Pinacoteca which means “storage for paintings” and Brera, which comes from the location of the gallery, Via Brera. The original collection present here was of Milan’s Academy of Fine arts, which is also located in the same building.

Today, the museum has 38 halls, each representing a different school of art from Venetian, to Tuscan, Lombard and others. In these halls, visitors can find a rich collection of Renaissance and Baroque art by the likes of Caravaggio, Raphael, Bellini, Rubens, Tintoretto, and Andrea Mantegna. The main masterpiece in the gallery is one of the most outstanding works of Raphael, “The Marriage of the Virgin”. The artist painted it at the age of 21, when he was a student of Pietro Perugino.

Every third Thursday the Pinacoteca di Brera arranges special 3 hour long events where all the visitors of the gallery can enjoy the paintings accompanied by live music. This delightful experiences costs only 3 euros. The gallery also offers its guests a unique chance to watch through glass walls how masters restore ancient pieces of art.
