Perge

The incredible ancient city of Perge, also known as Perga, has been continuously inhabited since the Copper Age (5th millennium BC). Like Aspendos, the legend states the the city was founded by the famous Greek diviner Mopsos. The city is famous for several extremely well preserved historical monuments. The most impressive of these are the Great Theater, which had a capacity of nearly 15,000, and the Stadium, which had a capacity of nearly 10,000, and the massive City Gate Towers from the Hellenistic period (4th century BC). Other important remains include the mile-long, colonnaded street, the southern baths, the agora, the acropolis on a nearby hilltop, various fountains and 5th and 6th century churches and temples that have been recently excavated. Despite the wealth of historical sites already discovered at Perge, archaeologists believe that over 70% of this 5000 year old city still remains underground!
