Shinjuku Gyoen National Park
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a beautiful and expansive park with a rich history dating back to the Edo period when it was originally established as a feudal lord’s residence. After the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century, it was converted into an imperial garden. Later, it became a national park, and today it is open to the public.
The park covers an area of approximately 58.3 hectares (about 144 acres), making it one of Tokyo’s largest green spaces. It features a harmonious blend of traditional Japanese gardens with ponds and bridges, cherry blossom groves, and various tree-lined pathways, as well as French and English gardens that showcase different styles of landscaping. Birdwatchers can appreciate the diverse birdlife that inhabits the park, including herons, kingfishers, and other species that frequent the ponds and gardens.
