Sapporo, Hokkaido
Settled by the indigenous Ainu people, beginning over 15,000 years ago, Sapporo, located in the southwest of Hokkaido, is Japan’s fifth largest city today. It is known as the site of the 1972 Winter Olympics, the first Winter Olympics ever held in Asia. Some of key sights in the city are the Sapporo Dome, which is famous for hosting three games during the 2002 FIFA World Cup and two games during the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the Sapporo Beer Museum, the TV tower located in Odori Park and Hokkaido University. The annual Sapporo Snow Festival, famous for hundreds of snow statues and sculptures, draws over 2 million tourists from abroad during the seven days in February when it is held.
