Nara
Nara is a city that predates Kyoto. It was the capital of Japan for 74 years, from 1710 to 1784. The city is famous for many important religious and traditional sights including:
1. The Kasuga-Taisha, Nara’s most celebrated shrine, established in 768 AD
2. The Todaiji Temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home to Japan’s largest bronze statue of Buddha (over 15 meters tall)
3. Nara Park, famous for its free-roaming deer that are sacred in Japanese culture
4. The beautiful Isuien Garden, which is divided into two distinct parts built two centuries apart and is a striking example of Japanese horticulture.
5. The charming Naramichi, historic merchant district, which showcases some exceptionally well preserved “machiya” Japanese town houses
