Miyajima/Itsukushima Island – Floating Torii Gate

Miyajima, officially known as Itsukushima Island, is a picturesque island located in Hiroshima Bay, near the city of Hiroshima. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, cultural significance, and the iconic “floating” Torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, one of the most photographed and iconic landmarks in Japan.

The Itsukushima Shrine, dating back to the 6th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of multiple buildings, including the main hall, prayer halls, and auxiliary buildings, all constructed over water. The architecture reflects the harmony between humans and nature. Perhaps the most famous landmark of the Itsukushima Shrine, and perhaps in all of Japan, is its Torii Gate. Since the foundation of the gate is set in the seabed, it appears to be floating when the tide rises. During low tide, visitors can walk up to the gate from the beach. Made of wood and painted in vermillion red, the gate is about 16 meters in height and weighs around 60 tons.

Miyajima Island is accessible from the city of Hiroshima by ferry in about 10-15 minutes. It is a popular day trip or overnight destination for tourists visiting Hiroshima. The island hosts various traditional festivals throughout the year, including religious ceremonies, performances, and fireworks displays. One of the most famous events is the annual “Miyajima Water Fireworks Festival.”
