Ryoan-ji Temple

Ryoan-ji Temple was originally built as a villa in the late 11th century during the Heian period. It was later converted into a Zen temple by the Hosokawa clan in the late 15th century. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Temple is renowned for its iconic Zen rock garden, which is considered one of the most important and influential examples of Japanese dry landscape (karesansui) gardens. This minimalist garden consists of 15 carefully placed rocks of different sizes surrounded by raked white gravel. The arrangement of the rocks and gravel is intentionally abstract and open to interpretation, inviting visitors to contemplate its meaning. The garden is known for its serene and contemplative atmosphere.

In addition to the Zen rock garden, Ryoan-ji has other beautiful gardens and a large pond with islets. The Kyoyochi Pond reflects the changing seasons and is particularly picturesque during the cherry blossom season in spring and the colorful foliage in autumn. Visitors can view the gardens from the Hojo, a traditional wooden building that serves as the abbot’s quarters and features traditional sliding doors, tatami mat flooring, and beautiful painted screens. Near the entrance of the Hojo, you’ll find a stone washbasin called a “tsukubai.” Visitors can purify their hands and mouth with water from the tsukubai before entering the temple. The basin is inscribed with the Zen phrase “I learn only to be contented” (ware tada taru wo shiru).

Ryoan-ji offers different seasonal experiences. Cherry blossoms in spring, vibrant foliage in autumn, and the peacefulness of the Zen garden in all seasons make it a worthwhile visit year-round.
