Kiyomizu-Dera

Kiyomizu-dera is a historic Buddhist temple located in eastern Kyoto, Japan. It was founded in 778 and has been rebuilt and expanded over the centuries. The current buildings date back to 1633, when the temple was reconstructed by the Tokugawa shogunate.

One of the most striking features of Kiyomizu-dera is the wooden stage that juts out from the main hall, providing a stunning view of the city. The stage is 13 meters high and supported by 139 pillars. Legend has it that if you jump off the stage and survive the fall, your wish will be granted, but this practice is no longer allowed.

The temple complex is also known for its beautiful gardens and numerous smaller buildings, including a pagoda and a hall dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. Visitors can also see the Otowa Waterfall, where three streams of water fall into a pond below. Drinking from each stream is said to bring health, longevity, and success in school or love, but visitors are only supposed to drink from one stream to avoid being greedy.

Kiyomizu-dera is also an important site for traditional Japanese festivals, such as the Kannou festival held in February and the Omizutori festival held in March. During these festivals, the temple is illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere.
