Hiroshima

On August 6, 1945, during World War II, Hiroshima was subjected to the first-ever wartime use of an atomic bomb. The bomb, named “Little Boy,” was dropped by the United States on the city, causing immense devastation and loss of life. The Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Dome), is one of the few buildings near the hypocenter that survived the blast and remains standing as a symbol of peace and remembrance. The Peace Memorial Park, near the Atomic Dome, is dedicated to the memory of the atomic bombing victims. It features numerous monuments, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, and the Children’s Peace Monument, which honors Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who survived the bombing but later succumbed to radiation-related illness.

Despite its tragic past, Hiroshima today is a thriving, modern city with a bustling downtown area, shopping districts, restaurants and nightlife, and several world-class universities and research institutions. The city also boasts a rich cultural heritage with sights like Hiroshima Castle (Hiroshima-jo), a historic castle that has been reconstructed and houses a museum, the Shukkeien Garden, a beautiful traditional Japanese garden, and local culinary delights like the famous Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with layers of ingredients including cabbage, noodles, and various toppings. The city also offers delicious oysters.
