Fontana di Trevi
The Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) is one of the most iconic and famous fountains in the world. The origins of the fountain date back to the year 19 BC, when the fountain, located at the junction of three roads (tre vie), marked the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo, one of the aqueducts that supplied water to ancient Rome. The first fountain was built during the Renaissance, under the direction of Pope Nicholas V. The current version of the fountain however, dates back to around 1762, after Nicola Salvi, Guiseppe Pannini and several other architects worked on it. Measuring 20 meters in width and 26 meters in height, the Fontana di Trevi is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. Visitors from all around the world come to the fountain to throw coins in it. The coins are supposed to be thrown using the right hand, over the left shoulder. An estimated 3000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day!
