Galleria dell’Accademia
The Galleria dell’Accademia is the second most visited art museum in Italy after the Uffizi Gallery. Founded in 1784, the Gallery has become famous for housing Michelangelo’s masterpiece, David. This white-marble sculpture, sculpted between 1501 and 1504 in the Opera del Duomo’s workshop, stands 5,17 meters tall and represents David before his fight with Goliath. It also came to symbolize the defense of civil liberties in the Republic of Florence that was constantly threatened by the Medici family and larger, neighbouring states. When the statue was completed, it was installed at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. It was moved to the Accademia in 1873 to protect it from adverse weather conditions. A replica was placed outside the Palazzo Vechhio in 1910. In addition to the David, the Gallery also has other sculptures by Michelangelo and a large collection of paintings by other artists, mainly from the period 1300-1600.
