Pergamum

Pergamum, also known as Pergamon, Pergamos or modern day Bergama, was once one of the major cultural centers of Greece. Situated on a lofty hill, 16 miles from the Aegean Sea, Pergamum was founded as early as the 5th century BC, but rose to prominence during the Hellenistic period (323-30 BC). The city is also an important site of Christian pilgrimage, as it is cited in the New Testament Book of Revelation as the northermost of the seven churches of Asia.

Some of the key sights in the city include the Sacred Way, the Acropolis, which rises 1300 feet above the lower city, the Asclepium, one of the world’s most ancient healing centers named after Asclepius (the god of healing), the Sereapeum, a temple to the Egyptian god of the underworld, the 2nd century Temple of Trajan, and the Theater, which is one of the steepest in Turkey, and could once hold around 10,000 spectators.
