Nafplio

Only a 2 hour drive from Athens, Nafplio is one of the most beautiful and romantic towns in Greece and a popular weekend destination. Apart from its stunning Venetian architecture, picturesque restaurants and cafes, spectacular waterfront promenade, and long sandy beaches, the town also has historical importance as the first capital of independent Greece (1823-1834), and the home of historical monuments like the Palamidi Castle, built by the Venetians in 1711, the Acronauplia fortress, and the Bourtzi, which has served as a castle, prison and a hotel.
