Temple of Hephaestus

Located on the north-west side of the Agora of Athens, the ancient meeting or gathering place of the city, the Temple of Hephaestus, constructed in the 5th century BC, is dedicated to Hephaestus, the patron god of fire, metal working and craftsmanship, and Athena, the goddess of pottery and crafts. A Doric peripteral temple, it has 6 columns on the short east and west sides and 13 on the north and south sides. Although its friezes and other decorations have been damaged, it is one of the best preserved ancient Greek temples, and remains standing largely intact. Located in a central area of Athens, the Temple is within a ten minute walk from the Thissio or Monastiraki metro stations.
