Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic, and one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities. One of the first European cities in the Americas, and a UNESCO World Heritage site, its walled, cobblestoned centre has buildings dating back to the 1500s. The city has several other interesting sights including a monastery, European fortress, many churches, plazas, palaces and museums, including the historic “Casa Reales,” a 16th century building that was the longtime seat of Spanish authority for the Caribbean region, and the “Alcázar de Colón” palace, the only known residence of a member of Christopher Columbus’s family (his first-born son Diego Columbus lived here). The most famous pedestrian area “El Conde” has many shops, street vendors, bars and restaurants.
