Tamarindo, Guanacaste

Located on the north Pacific Coast, in the Guanacaste region, Tamarindo has grown from a simple fishing village to one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica owing to its crystal clear turquoise waters, spectacular beaches, and pristine weather. There are several beaches in the area that are worth visiting. Tamarindo Beach itself is a long beach with great waves, the perfect spot for learning how to surf. Langosta Beach, just south of Tamarindo, is known for its white sand, tidal pools, and secluded location. Coconut Beach and Hermosa Beach are located about 30 mins south of Tamarindo, and are also great surfing locations. The town of Tamarindo has several bars and restaurants, an active nightlife, and a wide range of accommodations from budget hotels to luxury resorts.

About 30 minutes north of Tamarindo is Las Baulas National Marine Park, which is famous for the leatherback sea turtles (baulas) that return to lay their eggs each year at Grande Beach, between the months of November and April. These turtles, which can be up to 8 feet long and weigh over a 1000 pounds (the largest of all living sea turtle species), can be observed at night as they return to Grande Beach and dig meter-deep pits to bury their eggs, before returning to the sea.
