Monteverde Cloud Forest

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve in Puntarenas province, has been recognized as one of the “seven natural wonders of Costa Rica.” Low hanging clouds in the form of fog hover around the upper canopy of the forest before condensing onto the leaves of trees, giving the appearance that the sky has merged with the forest cover, and enabling visitors to have the experience of actually walking through the clouds on a suspension bridge that cuts across the canopy of the forest.

Established in 1972, and covering over 35,000 acres of land, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has six ecological zones that are home to over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles. It is also one of the few habitats where all six species of the cat family – jaguars, ocelots, pumas, oncillas, margays, and jaguarund – can be found. Today, the reserve is a major tourist destination that draws over 70,000 visitors per year.
