La Ciudad Perdida (Lost City)
Colombia offers a lot of different things – but nothing comes even close to the hiking and trekking in the country, and the Trek to the Lost City is perhaps the most famous of them all. Located in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the trek is said to be one of the best in South America, if not the world.
La Ciudad Perdida (literally the “Lost City”) is an archaeological site and ancient city in the middle of the jungle that predates Machu Picchu. First rediscovered in 1972 by a group of treasure looters on a mission to catch a wild turkey, they followed a set of steps in the middle of the jungle and stumbled across the long-forgotten settlement. Now, the preserved site is home to a network of ancient roads, several plazas, and – perhaps most impressive – 169 terraces carved into the mountainside.
