Cartagena

Cartagena is the second largest city in the Caribbean region of Colombia and one of the most important ports in the country. The city offers lush landscapes and beautiful beaches, several historic monuments, excellent nightlife, some of Columbia’s best restaurants, and an exciting blend of old and new to explore. There have been settlements in the area since around 4000 BC, but the current city was founded in 1533 during the Spanish colonization. Some of the key sights in the city include:

1. The Old Town (Ciudad Amurallada) – The heart of Cartagena and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this walled city is home to many historic buildings, churches, and plazas, and is a great place to explore on foot
2. Castillo San Felipe de Barajas – This impressive fortress was built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend against attacks by pirates and other enemies. You can tour the fort and enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Caribbean Sea from the top
3. Cartagena Walls – These walls are the most iconic feature of Cartagena, and were built in the 16th century to protect the city from attacks by pirates and other invaders. You can walk along the walls and enjoy beautiful views of the city and the sea
4. Plaza de Bolívar – This central square in the Old Town is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Cathedral of Cartagena and the Palace of the Inquisition. It’s a great place to people-watch and soak up the atmosphere of the city
5. Getsemaní – This vibrant neighborhood just outside the walls of the Old Town is known for its colorful street art, lively nightlife, and great restaurants
6. Palacio de la Proclamación – This beautiful colonial palace is now home to the Museum of the History of Cartagena and is a great place to learn about the city’s rich cultural heritage
7. La Popa Monastery – This 17th-century monastery is perched on a hill overlooking the city and offers panoramic views of Cartagena and the surrounding countryside
8. San Pedro Claver Church and Museum – This beautiful colonial church is named after Saint Peter Claver, a Spanish Jesuit who dedicated his life to helping slaves in Colombia. The attached museum displays a collection of religious art and artifacts
9. Las Bóvedas – This series of arches on the western side of the Old Town was originally built as a storage facility for the Spanish military, but is now home to shops selling local crafts and souvenirs
10. Islas del Rosario – These beautiful islands off the coast of Cartagena are a popular day trip destination, with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and great snorkeling and diving opportunities
