Cali

Located on the Pacific side of Colombia, Cali is known as the Salsa Capital of the world. The city has a vibrant nightlife scene with many salsa clubs, dance schools, and events throughout the year. You cannot visit without at least one dance in one of the salsa clubs! In addition to being famous for music, street parties, and dance – the city is also famous for its rich culinary tradition, influenced by the city’s Afro-Colombian and indigenous roots. Try local dishes such as sancocho, arroz atollado, and chontaduro, and don’t forget to sample some of the fresh tropical fruits that are abundant in the region.

Cali has a mix of colonial, neoclassical, and modern architecture, and there are several historic sites and museums to visit, including the La Merced Church, the Cali Cathedral, and the Museo La Tertulia. There are also several sights related to the famous Cali cartel, which was the arch nemesis of Pablo Escobar. La Ermita church in downtown Cali was reportedly used as a meeting place by the leaders of the Cali Cartel, including the Rodriguez Orejuela brothers. The Los Cristales Club, which is still in operation today, was also one of the key meeting places for members of the cartel.

While not dancing the night away, reveling in the delectable cuisine, or exploring Cali’s architecture, visitors can partake in several outdoor activities such as hiking, river rafting, and bird watching in the Cauca valley, and the surrounding mountains and forests.
