Puerto Varas & Puerto Montt

Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt are neighboring cities known for their stunning natural landscapes, proximity to picturesque lakes and volcanoes, and strong German influence in their culture and architecture.

Puerto Varas is situated on the southwestern shore of Lake Llanquihue, which is the second-largest lake in Chile. It is surrounded by beautiful forests, mountains, and the imposing Osorno Volcano. The city is often referred to as the “City of Roses and Volcanoes” because of its abundant rose gardens. It has well-preserved German colonial architecture, characterized by colorful wooden houses, churches, and civic buildings. One of the most iconic landmarks is the Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón (Church of the Sacred Heart). The region surrounding the city offers opportunities for hiking, trekking, and exploring national parks, such as Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. The Petrohué Waterfalls and Osorno Volcano Ski Center in particular are popular attractions. Lake Llanquihue also offers numerous recreational activities, including swimming, kayaking, sailing, and fishing.

Puerto Montt is located just to the south of Puerto Varas on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. It is a major center for Chile’s fishing industry, and its fish market, Mercado Municipal, is a bustling place to sample fresh seafood and local cuisine. Visitors can take a short ferry ride to Tenglo Island, which offers panoramic views of the city, the surrounding fjords, and the Andes in the background.
