Valle del Arcoiris, Atacama

Valle del Arcoiris (Rainbow Valley) is an area surrounded by mountains with multi-colored rock formations ranging from ochres, to greens, blacks, purples and browns. The multitude of colors is attributed to the richness and concentration of different types of clay, salts and minerals. These mineral-rich rocks have been eroded over millions of years by wind and water, creating the distinct and vibrant shades that give the valley its name.

Valle del Arcoiris features a wide range of geological formations, including canyons, eroded hills, and layered rock formations. In addition to these geological wonders, the valley is home to ancient petroglyphs created by the indigenous Atacameño people. Despite the harsh desert conditions, the valley is also home to some hardy plant species and desert wildlife. Visitors may encounter cacti, lichens, and various bird species while exploring the valley.
