Valle de la Luna, Atacama

Valle de la Luna, or the Valley of the Moon, which formed nearly 22 million years ago, is a surreal and otherworldly natural attraction located near San Pedro de Atacama in the Atacama Desert. Its breathtaking combination of large sand dunes, valleys and hills of salt, rock and sand, famous rock formations like Las Tres Marias, and its resemblance to the surface of the Moon and Mars, make it one of the most visited places in Atacama.

Valle de la Luna is a popular spot for watching the sunset, and many visitors come here in the late afternoon to witness the valley’s transformation as the sun dips below the horizon. The valley’s landscapes at this time are awash with a wide range of colors, including shades of red, brown, orange, and purple creating an ever-changing visual spectacle. Due to its clear skies and minimal light pollution, Valle de la Luna is also a popular location for stargazing and astronomical observation. Some tour operators offer night tours that include stargazing activities in the valley.
