Chaxa Lagoon, Atacama

The Chaxa Lagoon is a part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, located right in the middle of the Salar de Atacama or the Atacama Salt Flat, the second largest salt flat in the world. It is an example of a hypersaline ecosystem, meaning that the water contains very high levels of salt and other minerals.

One of the main attractions of Chaxa Lagoon is the presence of three species of flamingos: the Andean flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus), the Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis), and the James’s flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi). These elegant and colorful birds feed on the algae and small invertebrates that thrive in the saline waters of the lagoon. Visitors can often spot these birds wading in the shallow waters or taking flight against the backdrop of the salt flats and the Andes Mountains.

The lagoon is surrounded by stunning desert landscapes, with the snow-capped peaks of the Andes in the background. The contrast between the azure waters of the lagoon, the white salt crust, and the arid desert scenery creates a surreal and beautiful panorama. It is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and anyone interested in experiencing the extraordinary landscapes of northern Chile.
