Santiago

Founded by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia in 1541, Santiago is one of the oldest cities in the Americas. Today, it is Chile’s political and economic hub, and home to a diverse range of industries, including finance, commerce, manufacturing, and technology. It also boasts a rich cultural scene with numerous theaters, art galleries, museums, and cultural festivals.

Located in the fertile Santiago Basin between the Andes Mountains to the east and the Chilean Coastal Range to the west, Santiago is a very scenic city. Tall skyscrapers can be seen set against the backdrop of the snow-capped Andes. Some of the key sights in the city include the La Moneda Palace, Plaza de Armas, Metropolitan Cathedral, Mercado Central, Costanera Center, with its iconic skyscraper, and the Teleférico de Santiago, a cable car which goes up to the Metropolitan Park on the top of San Cristóbal Hill.
