St. Lucia
As the only country in the world named after a woman, St. Lucia nurtures visitors with beauty and tranquility. Cradle yourself between the iconic Pitons Mountains protruding above the island, feel the hospitality of the locals, and let the affectionate warmth of the Caribbean sun fill you with the tropical spirit.
St. Lucia was initially given a native name of the “island of iguanas’ by the Arawak tribes from South America after the endemic Green Iguanas inhabiting it. However, the island’s name and culture were changed by the Kalinago Caribs tribes, who occupied the island from 800 AD and still have descents there today. A highly guarded island, St. Lucia wasn’t settled by Europeans until 1635, when the French arrived. Its location and sugar-producing potential made for a constant rivalry between the French and British, and the island changed hands constantly throughout the 17th century. The UK was however the last foreign power to rule over it. St. Lucia finally gained independence in 1979, making it one of the last Caribbean nations to do so.
St. Lucia is the second largest of the Windward Islands, with incredible nature near either coast. You can’t visit St. Lucia without spending time admiring its most iconic landmarks, The Pitons, which are even depicted on its national flag as a symbol of upward aspirations for St. Lucians. These verdant peaks are always in view as you explore the island. But for the best views, take a dinner cruise along the coast, hike to an adjacent summit via the Tet Paul Nature Trail, or enjoy the sweet views nestled between them on Sugar Beach.
Castries, the capital of St. Lucia, is on the northwestern coast and the heartbeat of the island. Immerse yourself into the local culture pulsating through the colorful Central Market, wander inside local galleries to see the island’s immense creativity, or gaze over ships entering Castries Harbour from atop Mount Fortune.
With its breathtaking landscapes, numerous adventure activities, and luxurious jungle resorts pampering those inclined for relaxation, St. Lucia is a place you’ll dream about before, during, and after your trip.
