Jamaica

Jamaica, the Caribbean’s third largest island, is nothing more than the peak of a massive underwater mountain protruding from the water to reveal wonders millions of years in the making. The island has everything from lush mountainous landscapes filled with hidden waterfalls, to historical sites, spectacular beaches, and a vibrant local culture.

Two prominent Native American groups—the Taino and Arawak peoples enjoyed centuries of peace on the island dating back to 600 AD. The Caribbean explorations by Christopher Columbus in 1492 brought the first Spaniards to this “land of blessed gold,” as referenced by Cubans who pointed the way to its pristine shores. For almost 150 years (1510-1655), Jamaica fell under Spanish control, being a major Caribbean port for sugarcane production and introducing a substantial population of enslaved Africans to support the economy. In 1655, the British conquered Jamaica, and ruled it until its independence in 1962.

Some of the key sights in Jamaica include:
1. The capital Kingston with attractions like Emancipation Park, which honors Jamaica’s independence, and the Bob Marley Museum, which honors the life of the iconic Reggae music legend
2. Fort Charles, a monument dating back to the era of British rule
3. Green Grotto Caves, which served as a refuge for native Tainos and enslaved Africans escaping the British rulers
4. Ocho Rios, a northern coastal region that is famous for the world-class white sand shores at Ocho Rios Bay Beach and James Bond Beach, which also has the famous Moonraker bar where jazz, blues, soca and reggae concerts are often held
5. Dunn’s River Falls, home to several adventure activities like ziplining and rock climbing
