Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands is an archipelago in the Greater Antilles consisting of three islands—Grand Cayman, the largest, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. Nicknamed the ‘Islands that time forgot,’ the Cayman Islands is a paradise that makes you lose all sense of time.
First discovered by Christopher Columbus, the Cayman islands were given global recognition by Sir Francis Drake, who wrote about the the “great serpents called Caymanas, like large lizards, which are edible.” The population boom in the Cayman Islands started in the 1700s when settlers brought enslaved peoples to the island from Africa. Even after slavery was abolished in 1834, the considerable African population resulted in the diversity on the island you see today, with many locals tracing their heritage to the African continent or England.Today, the Cayman Islands remain a British Territory since being claimed by England in the Treaty of Madrid of 1670. British settlement introduced traditions remain evident today, such as the Union Jack dawned on the national flag, a population with 90% speaking the national language of English, and even driving on the left side of the road.
The main attractions for tourists visiting the Cayman Islands include pristine white sand beaches, transparent blue waters, water sports like parasailing and jet skiing, diving to see the storied shipwrecks off the coast, sunset cruises, and bioluminescence tours at night. Of the beaches, Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman is the most famous for its seemingly endless stretch of coastline nestled between the island’s top beachfront resorts and warm Pacific waters, while Starfish Point allows tourists to see and play with giant starfish.
Georgetown, the capital of the Cayman islands, offers tourists several attractions. Tourists can rent scooters or cars to visit various sights, including:
1. Heroes Square, the 18th century Fort George with its abandoned cannons and stunning ocean views
2. The Cayman Spirits Company which offers tourists a taste of ocean-aged rum
3. Cayman Crystal Caves which has a choir of stalagmites hidden in the mouth of the caves
4. The Cayman Turtle Center and Dolphin Discovery, where tourists can, learn more about the local wildlife
5. The Cultural History Gallery inside the Cayman Islands National Museum where visitors can learn how the Cayman Islands emerged from its slavery history to major industries today
6. The 75-foot observation tower at Camana Bay which offers a panoramic view of the island,
Let the beautiful Cayman Islands be your Caribbean getaway. From the world-class Seven Mile Beach to the culture-rich streets in George Town to the lush green inner island adventures, it’s a destination that claims part of your heart when you depart!
