British Virgin Islands

The 50+ islands of the British Virgin Islands offer unmatched bliss for travelers seeking water sport fun, luxurious serenity, and Caribbean charm. The first documented island inhabitants were Arawaks and later Caribs, a prominent Lesser Antilles native tribe. Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492, however, European settlement didn’t begin until the Dutch arrived in the 1600s, establishing slavery and trade from the islands. During the 1672 Anglo-Dutch War, the British gained control over Tortola Island, the largest island, and the Danish gained control of neighboring large islands in the Virgin Islands chain. The US later purchased the islands owned by the Danish to create the US Virgin Islands, while the British maintained their control through the present day.

Tortola, the largest island, is blessed with both nature and culture. Wind your way through the shady trails of Mount Sage National Park while ascending 1,710 feet to the Sage Mountain summit for panoramic views of the island. Escape to Smuggler’s Cove, where the real treasure is priceless views stretching along its shimmering sandy shores. Wander past the colorful colonial buildings dotting Road Town hosting spice shops, art galleries, and museums. Finally, hitch a ferry ride from the Tortola Pier Park to sail the translucent waters where land is never too far away on the horizon.
