Panathenaic Stadium

The Panathenaic Stadium is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble. The original stadium was built around 330 BC for the Panathenaic Games, but it was rebuilt in marble, and expanded to have a capacity of 50,000 seats by Roman senator Herodes Atticus in 144 AD. The stadium is famous for hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympic games in 1896, and as a venue for the 2004 Olympic games.

The stadium is ideally located in downtown Athens, just 1000 meters from the “Syntagma”, “Acropolis” and “Evangelismos” metro stations. You can get there by metro, bus, taxi or even walk.
