Salinas Grandes

Located about 4.5 hours north of Salta, Salinas Grandes is a large salt flat at an average altitude of about 3,450 m (11,320 ft). This vast white desert was once Lago Salinas Grandes, a lake that evaporated in the Holocene epoch. Covering nearly 212 km sq, it is the third largest salt flat in the world. In addition to the salt flats, there are several other spectacular sights on the road here from Salta, including the town of Pumamarca and the Hill of Seven Colors.
