Iguazu Falls

The waterfalls on the Iguazu river on the border between Argentina and Brazil, collectively known as Iguazu Falls, are the widest waterfalls in the world. For most of its course, the Iguazu river flows in Brazil, however the majority of the falls are on the Argentine side. About half of the river’s flows fall into a long and narrow chasm called Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo), right along the border between the two countries. Here, 14 interconnected falls tumble down 350 feet and send up a powerful cloud of rainbow-striped mist.

The falls can be reached from two towns, Puerto Iguazú in Argentina, and Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil, and are shared between two national parks, one on either side of the border. On the Argentinian side, an open train makes a journey to paths and lookouts of the superior and inferior trails, to admire the imposing 275 waterfalls, flora and fauna. On the Brazilian side, a walkway along the canyon has an extension to the lower base of Devil’s Throat.

Iguazu Falls is often compared with two other famous waterfalls, Niagara Falls on the US and Canada border, and Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe and Zambia border. Of the three, Iguazu Falls is the widest at 2,700 m vs. 1,700 m for Victoria Falls, and 945 m for Niagara. However, Victoria Falls is the highest, with a height of 108 m vs. 82 m for Iguazu and 54 m for Niagara, and Niagara Falls has the highest flow rate of nearly 2,800 sq. meters / second vs. 1500-1700 at Iguazu and only 1100 at Victoria Falls.
